Mickey Champion Sings The Blues

Mickey’s a million and one years old, but she’s got the guts of a rowdy rebel teenage girl. She’s performed and opened for the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billy Holliday, Ike and Tina Turner and Jackie Wilson.

If you haven’t seen her, go check her out. She performs down at Babe and Ricky’s Inn on Monday nights she likes to get shitfaced on whiskey and dance with the crowd. If you go, you won’t see me, but I’ll be the ghost in the back crying into my ginger ale.

Here’s a rare clip of her singing into a microphone. She usually howls it out with no help at all.

FIRSTS - UK

‘I guess I was about 5 years old. My sister Nancy took me to the cemetery to visit my other sister Bonnie’s grave for the first time. We wrote her a message in chalk on the headstone, something about loving and missing her. It started to rain as we drove off in Nancy’s powder blue late seventies Mustang. Supertramp “The Logical Song” was playing on the radio and I was freaking out because I was worried Bonnie wasn’t going to get the message.’ - kostrzak
