‘Gonzo’ Trailer

Looks awesome.

Let’s hope it is.

I first discovered Hunter in high school after reading an excerpt from ‘Polo Is My Life’ in Rolling Stone. If anything it only helped reaffirm the path that I was already on. The best music, the best art, the best writing, in addition to a world of other things, a) makes you feel, but also b) makes you feel less alone, shrinks the world around the creator and their audience.

‘Gonzo’ being the title kind of scares me though.

One of the reasons the latest Bukowski documentary ‘Born Into This’ was so successful is that the first 10 minutes or so sucked the average Bukowski fan in with what they wanted to see: drunken debauchery, belligerence and madness, before stopping on a dime and dropping them inside the great sadness that was much of his life and the tragic beauty (lame I know) that permeated his most crucial work. I went opening night, the Friday before a holiday weekend, and half the audience was drunk.

I was not.

And it was an awesome moment in the theater when the crowd stopped laughing, started listening and allowed the film to introduce them to the complicated and sensitive creature that Charles Bukowski could also be, the Bukowski the crowd didn’t realize they’d actually come to see after reading something that made them want to get in the car and drive to the theater the first place.

‘For Jane’
- Charles Bukowski

225 days under grass
and you know more than I.
they have long taken your blood,
you are a dry stick in a basket.
is this how it works?
in this room
the hours of love
still make shadows.

when you left
you took almost
I kneel in the nights
before tigers
that will not let me be.

what you were
will not happen again.
the tigers have found me
and I do not care.
